Great reading!
Wonderful book from a series that provides hours of fun reading, especially for kids who are Nascar fans.

This book is a great introduction to NASCAR
This book has a lot of action. My mom and I really enjoyed reading it together. I would like to read all of the Nascar series that he wrote.

I really loved it!
This is number 2 in the NASCAR series and it is just as good as number 1 (Race Ready). In The Groove is in the groove. If you like cars you will love this book. The characters are very interesting. It was a fast read. I cannot wait for number 3!

New Moon Sports: What Sports Can Do for You and What You Can Do With Sports
Published in Library Binding by Crown Pub (August, 1999)
Authors: New Moon Books Girls Editorial Board, Lauren Calhoun, Ashley Cofell, Morgan Fykes, Katie Hedberg, Elizabeth Larsson, Priscilla Mendoza, Julia Peters-Axtell, Caitlin Stern, and New Moon Girl's Editorial Board
Average review score:

An introduction to girls and their sports dreams
"New Moon" magazine is devoted to helping girls discover their hopes and dreams. It always has an editorial board of girls ages ten to fourteen from across the country (although it is put together here in Duluth), which certainly ensures that the perspective accurately reflects the target audience. "New Moon Sports" covers why sports are good for girls, the benefits of competition, a brief history of women in sports, and information about how to keep your body healthy. Some of the more interesting features are a look at sports myths (e.g., boys are better at sports than girls), interviews with famous athletes (Bonnie Blair and Cathy Rigby), helpful tips (e.g., Hot Soccer Tips), and lots of suggestions as to what girls can do in terms of sports. Consequently, this is a valuable introductory text. There is not a lot of depth to the information presented herein, but what is here is on valuable and on target. There are also numerous sources for additional information where girls can easily go to find out more about whatever topic interests them, whether it is body image, a particular sport, or a favorite athlete. Other equally worthwhile books from "New Moon" focus on friendship, money, and writing.

two thumbs up!
This book was written by girls just like you. It will make you laugh, smile and even cry. But most of all it will give you a wonderful sense of self confidence and help you reach out and make friends. I highly reccomend it, that is, if you want to be sure of yourself in friendships, self confident and happy with your friends. I give it a big smile and two thumbs up!

A heartfelt book dealing with issues about girls in sports
I'm a girl editor for this book. I feel that there is not enough writing out there by girls for girls. This book is just that:by girls and for girls. I feel that girls and sports mix wonderfully. They let you free to jump, kick and just be you. They let your spirit free. You don't have to worry about getting dirty(not that you have to worry anyway) and you can let passion fly. This should be known by all girls. All girls should know the adrenaline rush in jumping into a pool or surfing or kicking a ball to a teammate. This book shows you, you can go out there and get the rush of feeling strong and being part of something bigger than just you. This book shows you girls and women who are great athletes or just girls who enjoy sports. It gives you some advice on how to get started in a sport and helps you find your particular sport made just for you. I know that I have put my heart into this book for all girlkind and hope I have opened girls eyes to the wonderful opportunities they have in sports and how they can take hold of those opportunities and fly. This book is only one in a series of books written by me and seven other girls as a source for girls and their dreams. We want girls to know that they can pursue anything they want. If you have an opportunity, take it. If you have a passion, follow it. Please, disregard my rating and rate it for yourself.

With Lee in Virginia
Published in Paperback by PrestonSpeed Publications (18 July, 1999)
Authors: G. A. Henty, Gordon Browne, George A. Henty, and George Calhoun
Average review score:

Wonderful history lesson of the Civil War
An extra bonus in this Henty book is that it includes both the English preface and the American one, which Henty wrote to the 'lads' who would read this book. In With Lee in Virginia Vincent Wingfield is the main character, one who lives on a plantation run by slaves, but who is strongly against being cruel to slaves. When he clashes with the overseer over Pearson having whipped a slave, Vincent never imagines it will cause such trouble. Soon, though, Vincent gets involved in the fate of the slave he saved, Tony. Will Vincent be able to help the man escape from the wicked Jackson? What about Tony's wife, who Jackson is selling for revenge? This book draws you right in plantation life in the 18hundreds, you will feel happy with the knowledge that 'your' slaves are safe, and will never even consider that you are doing wrong by keeping slaves. Vincent enlists as a volunteer after Virginia secedes and accomplishes many deeds of bravery. This is just another in a long line of thrilling books writing by George Alfred Henty, don't miss reading a single one!!!

Superb!
This book is definitely one of Mr. Henty's masterpieces. It gives a clear view of the South's situation and why the Civil War was fought. I highly enjoyed this book, both for its content and the way history is mingled with a gripping plot. I can't tell you too much because I might spoil it, but it is about a young Southern man who joins the Confederate army and distinguises himself through his many adventures.

Exciting and engaging, I couldn't put it down.
I really loved this book written from a rare Confederate view point. The author beautifully portrayed virtues such as honor and courage in the young hero, Vincent. They say these books are written for teenage boys, but I'm a twelve year old girl and I couldn't put down the book for three days. It is probably won of the most exciting books I've ever read.

Compass American Guides : Maine
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (May, 1997)
Authors: Charles C. Calhoun, Patricia Harris, David Lyon, Thomas Mark Szelog, and Compass American
Average review score:

Next best thing to going there
Charles Calhoun's MAINE is a departure from most travel guides. Rather than just pages and pages of lists of motels, restaurants, and things to see, Calhoun focuses on the state's people (past and present), natural history, and state-of-mind. Instead of simply an address and phone number for the famous L. L. Bean's (outdoor outfitters, for example, Calhoun gives us several pages, including the story of the founder of the company.

The book opens with a chapter entitled "Learning Maine" and is organized geographically into nine main sections which cover the entire state. The final chapter, "Practical Information" gives all the usual, plus "A Dozen Fun Places to Eat" and antiquarian booksellers. Scattered throughout the book are literary excerpts and topical essays by authors such as May Sarton, John McPhee, and Longfellow. There are maps, reproductions of period art, and plenty of gorgeous color photos. Whether the reader is planning a trip to Maine or merely wishes an intriguing armchair journey, this guide is a must.

Interesting/Informative/Beautiful Pictures
An excellent book to take along with you during your travels to Maine. The photos in this book are simply beautiful! The photographer, Thomas Mark Szelog actually lives in the lighthouse on the cover!! I was lucky enough to meet him and he was kind enough to show me some of his photgraphs. Absolutely beautiful work. This is a great book and I highly recommend it when you travel down east!

Digital Cellular Radio (The Artech House Telecommunication Library)
Published in Hardcover by Artech House (June, 1988)
Author: George Calhoun
Average review score:

From concept to technical details. Very Comprehensive Book!
This book helped me understand this complicated subject. This book covers the economic reasons for a particular cellular system design as well as the technical aspect. Although technology changes rapidly in this field, I feel this book will make an excellent reference for anyone interested in this subject.

Excellent perspective of Radio Technology
In short time I had to learn Radio Technology. As usual when approaching new subject I bought and borrowed a dozen of books. The problem with most books is as usual, that you already have to know the subject in order to benefit from them. Not so with this book. I've read it just like a crime novel and I think I've got better understanding of the subject than I've got from rest of the books. So start with this book and then you will be ready to attack any of the other books from authors like Sklar, Proakis, Miller and Blake.

Considerable Understanding of Professional Ethics
The book is easy reading and gets to the core of the complicated topic of business Ethics. Many examples are given where total business failures resulted, due to intentional or accidental disregard of conflicting issues regarding business ethics. The book should be required reading for students as well as business professionals and would be a useful pocket reference, especially where ethical issues are not clear.

Facilitating Posttraumatic Growth: A Clinician's Guide (Personality and Clinical Psychology Series)
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (August, 1999)
Authors: Lawrence G. Calhoun and Richard G. Tedeschi
Average review score:

An Excellent Source
This is an excellent source not only for clinical workers, but also for nonprofessionals interested in how to help others, and perhaps themselves, after a trauma. Easy to read, full of really good suggestions, and it is a steal at the price!

Hope After Trauma
Calhoun and Tedeschi, psychologists for some years have been studying and writing about posttraumatic growth, offer an excellent source for clinicians and for laypersons too. The book focuses on how some people who struggle with trauma can grow and develop in sometimes unexpected ways. In this book, the authors suggest ways by which the counselor can enhance the chances that clients, who have experienced major life crises, can grow from their difficult struggles.
The volume is not too long,it is full of helpful ideas, and it is written in a clear and engaging style.

If you give me information abaut yourself it will help my homework and my friends will learn more abaut you and this will make me happy.Sincerelly, Mehmet

I loved it!
Dear Mr. Calhoun, I am a sixth grade student who has read every one of your Dinosaur Dectective books and am waiting every day for number eight and nine. I think you should keep the books going until you solve ALL the mysteries - since I want to be a dinosaur detective myself when I grow-up I know this will take a long, long time. This summer I am going on a week long dinosaur digging camping trip. I can't wait to live what I read about in your books. If you have time, could you please write back to me? I would really like to show a letter from you to my friends at school. I'm a slow reader, slowest in my class, but my teacher and parents are very nice and they know I will always read anything about dinosaurs. Thasnk you sOOO much for writing about a boy who is just like me. Sincerely, Stephen Hoffner-McCall 311 Summit Rd. Media, PA 19063 610-565-7196

High Wire Henry
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (April, 1991)
Authors: Mary Calhoun and Erick Ingraham
Average review score:

What will Henry the cat do next?
My daughter absolutely loves Henry the adventerous cat. I believe that we have most all of Mary Calhoun's childrens books. The Henry the cat books are illustrated and written wonderfully. We can't wait until Henry the x-mas cat book comes out!

A talented Siamese cat cleverly overcomes "sibling rivalry"
Kids will love the Henry books! Henry is a very talented Siamese cat who learns to balance on his hind legs. He puts his talent to good use when he rescues the newcomer to the family. Kids will love this book because it successfully blends suspense with the themes of sibling rivalry and working hard to overcome obstacles. And, of course, it has a happy ending! On another level, parents and teachers can use this engaging story as a way to tie in to discussions about the scientific concepts of balance (center of gravity) and motion. Suitable for pre-K to grade 3.

Honestly, Katie John
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins Publishers (September, 1972)
Author: Mary Calhoun
Average review score:

My favorite childhood series
Katie John continues in her own way to plot out her own way. She was my hero when I was a child and I have enjoyed sharing her with my daughter. Buy the book! Buy the whole series. It is so much fun.

Katie is a girl like Beverly Cleary's Ellen Tebbits
I read this book when I was 9 in 4th grade. In summer 1985 I was with my family on vacation on the washinton coast staying in a cabin in Grays Harbor area, and Mom would go garage sale-ing during the day. She bought this book for 10c and I knew I was going to like it. The inside title page showed Katie on her bike and she reminded me of Beverly Cleary's Ellen Tebbits. I fell in love with Katie that summer day. The book is so good and Katie is so much like me. EVERYONE, READ KATIE JOHN! Mary should continue this series. It is good and I'm sure a lot of people agree!
